North Georgia Business Value Job Training Programs Ensure Employment Readiness – SaportaReport

Goodwill North Georgia has been recognized as the best-performing company in the nation for helping job seekers secure employment. Goodwill’s workforce development program offers a comprehensive training approach to prepare individuals for competitive employment. The program includes an assessment of job skills and experience, training in a competitive work environment such as a Goodwill store or with a local employer, as well as job assessments, job readiness skills, job placement and employee retention services.

An example of what Goodwill’s employee development program is preparing to address is the recently announced new 976-room Signia by Hilton Atlanta, which is looking to hire more than 700 employees to help run the 40-story facility.

Although Goodwill of North Georgia is not working directly with Hilton on this project, graduates of Goodwill of North Georgia’s hospitality training program will prepare enrollees for the type of employment offered by the hotel. In the 6-week program, created in partnership with the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute, participants receive on-the-job, paid on-the-job training in a real hotel that will prepare them for front-of-house and back-of-house jobs. Participants learn customer service, front desk and porter duties, reservations experience, housekeeping, laundry services and restaurant services. Graduates of the program have been hired for positions such as customer service managers, front desk managers and general managers.

Former retiree Gloria Heard was an intern in Goodwill’s hospitality program when the Fairfield Inn and Suites held a job fair. Gloria attended and was employed by the hotel. Gloria’s main tasks while working in the hotel include keeping the lobby and public waiting room clean and performing various support tasks for managers. Gloria plans to remain at the hotel for the foreseeable future and thanks Goodwill for preparing her for this position.

Orlena Stocks also completed the Goodwill’s Hospitality program. She was referred to the Smyrna Career Center through the Department of Family and Children’s Services’ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and enthusiastically entered the career transition program. After completing the Goodwill Hospitality Program, Orlena was employed as a prep cook at SunTrust Park. Orlena says she loves working at Braves Stadium because she enjoys serving so many people.

As more employment and career opportunities emerge throughout the region, Goodwill of North Georgia is committed to providing training and internship opportunities to help people find jobs, better jobs and careers.
