Local businesses and residents can come together to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which honors the contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce. Even though Arkansas has one of the highest rates of people with disabilities, the state ranks among the lowest in terms of labor market participation for people with disabilities. The Arkansas Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities works year-round to raise awareness. “Disability is everywhere. For employers and businesses to understand that not only do people with disabilities always exist, but they also want to work with their clients,” said Jonathan Taylor, executive director of the council. “So having a good relationship with people with disabilities is good for everyone.”Taylor believes that most companies in our region agree that employing people with disabilities is important, but when it comes to implementing these ideas, there is a disconnect. This week, the Arkansas Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities will host an inclusion summit with businesses and people in the community to address this disconnect. The free event will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. at the Graduate Hotel in Fayetteville.
